My friend the cabinet and furniture maker recommended Emmet's Good Stuff to finish my Hemlock trim (door frames, baseboards and window surrounds). It's expensive, but I make it up on time and the finish is beautiful. Very low gloss, no color change, low odor and drop-dead easy to use. I lightly sanded the Hemlock with 120 and a palm sander, dusted and wiped it down with a dry rag. One coat on the back sides and butt cuts. 3-4 coats on the fronts and edges with 0000 steel wool lightly between coats.Application: Nitryl gloves and an old t-shirt. Depending on the width of a board, I dip 2 or 3 fingers in to the first knuckle and start 6" from the end of the board and work with circular strokes out to the end and then move back past the starting point. With your gloved hand, scrape any excess into a new area. Use as small an amount as possible to get a wet look on your work. In 1-2 minutes (depending on temperature) wipe the area with straight, with the grain strokes using your t-shirt rag. If the rag drags, you waited too long or didn't put enough Good Stuff on the wood. Wait a minimum of 4 hours between coats (I cheat and wait 3 hours if I can dry them in the SE Alaska sunshine – not usually very intense) and hit it lightly with 0000 steel wool to smooth it out.The more coats, the less material you need to apply. Just make certain that when you wipe it off it's not tacky. The only way to get bad results is to use too much or let it get dry before wiping it off. A bit of a learning curve, but super fast and easy to use. It's hard to see the gloss, but you can see the SE Alaska Rain forest mist beading up on the surface in the first image. The second image shows before and after 4 coats.6 star rating if I could.
