I want to join the chorus of reviewers that have praised Don’t Sweat the Talk Stuff. Easy to read and understand, filled with humor, sage advice and practical suggestions, Jane Beard has written a delightful book with life-changing potential. It’s a strong statement I know, but it happens to be true.Based on her own life experiences as well as her study of the science of how our brains and nervous system functions, Jane Beard provides the reader with an introduction on how to face and understand their own fears as she has hers. As a coach and as someone who has been coached, I have experienced those moments of recognition and release that are so wonderfully described and illustrated in this book. Those moments have the power to free people from formally unseen or misdirected fears...if that is not life changing, what is?However, I do have to clarify one thing, in my opinion, to say that this book is for only people who “sweat the talk stuff” is a disservice. The fact is the same approaches and exercises the book offers to uncover a source of hidden fear or anxiety work just as well with other aspects of our work or personal lives. Whether it is communicating one to one, expressing ourselves in writing or a visual art, or simply wishing to be ourselves in a give and take relationship, we all come up against those buried land mines that were initially designed to protect us from danger but now interfere with our wish to move beyond, to relate in new ways and achieve a goal or vision. But just reading this book is not enough. I strongly urge anyone who chooses to read the book, to take the exercises seriously. Yes, just reading the book can be a help, but putting those exercises to work can be transformative in both subtle and not so subtle ways. The science, as simple as Jane makes it sound, is real and it works. Those exercises can be a life-long help.In the spirit of full disclosure and honesty, I feel compelled to acknowledge that I have known and worked with Jane over quite a number of years. This has provided me with a recurring opportunity to see from afar her growth and maturing process, which so vibrantly moves through this book. Brava, Jane.
